how to hire a freelance writer in Singapore

So you’re looking for a freelance writer in Singapore who has stellar writing skills that can help you successfully complete your writing project?

In my previous blog post, I wrote about where you can find good freelance writers in Singapore. You can read the article here at http://tanhweehwee.com/index.php/2016/09/26/where-to-find-a-good-freelance-writer-in-singapore/

Once you’ve found some freelance writers through the methods I wrote about in the blog post (eg through search engines, social media or referrals), you can start to examine the profiles of various freelance writers you’re considering. Ask the freelance writer that you’re thinking of hiring to send you their resume or look at their website.

What should you look for in a freelance writer when you’re looking at their credentials?

Education

What sort of education does the freelance writer have? Has he gone to university? If so, which university did he attend and what did he study? Common degrees for freelance writers include English and Mass Communications. If the project you’re looking for requires industry specific knowledge, you may want to see if the writer has studied a subject related to that industry. For example, if you’re looking for someone to write financial content, you may want to hire a writer who has an economics, finance or business degree.

Type of writing projects

There are a large variety of writing projects and each type requires a different skill. For example, is your project a brochure, article, case study, white paper, advertisement, social media post etc? You would want to know how much experience the writer has in writing the type of project you want to hire them for. If you want a writer to whip up a snazzy brochure, it might not be a good idea to hire someone whose main output is articles.

Client list

Find out which companies and publications the writer has worked for. If you’re looking to hire a freelance journalist, ask the writer if he’s ever been a staff writer or editor on a publication. If you’re looking to hire a freelance copywriter, find out which agencies he’s worked with. You can also find out which publications and companies the writer has worked for as a freelancer.

Industries

Which industry are you hiring the freelance writer to write for? Check out if he’s had any experience working in that industry or if he’s written material for that industry.

Awards

Find out if the freelance writer has won any awards for his writing.

Testimonials

You can ask the freelance writer if he has any recommendations from previous clients that he can share with you.

Writing samples

Ask the freelance writer if he has any writing samples that are of the type of writing you’re looking for, and which are relevant to the industry and topic that you’re looking to hire the writer to work in.
